Leaders Focus on Threats to IT Infrastructure
MT. PROSPECT, IL – More than 60 business, technology, and risk management executives were treated to EMP GRID Services’ comprehensive briefing on the direct threats to our nation’s Critical Infrastructure, including power, technology, and security at their headquarters in Mt. Prospect, Illinois. With the globalization of commerce, the US economic opportunities are boundless, as are the risks. No longer limited to geographic borders, the threat matrix facing the country has expanded beyond cyberterrorism to include emerging threats such as EMP (“Electromagnetic Pulse”) and GMS (“Geomagnetic Storm”) events.
US Congressmen Todd Rokita and Peter Roskam discussed the need for increased awareness across the business community and general population, of the threats posed from both nation states and “lone wolf” terrorist groups. Representatives from the FBI and InfraGard, the private sector interface to the FBI for sharing of information in protection of the US’ national interests, shared real-world examples of exploits used by nation states such as China to defraud and steal trade secrets that would compromise US-based companies from competing in the global market.
Leading global knowledge experts, Dr. William Radasky, of Metatech Corporation and Mr. Michael Caruso, of ETS-Lindgren Inc., shared detailed insights spanning the scope and magnitude that the threats of EMP, HEMP and IEMI pose to critical IT infrastructure and the methods available to protect the infrastructure. Dr. Radasky elaborated on his first hand experiences visiting the former Soviet Union’s comprehensive EMP weapons labs and how EMP hardening became a core fixture for the military during the height of the cold war. Both Dr. Radasky and Mr. Caruso described how non-nuclear weaponized EMP technology has evolved and has become a very serious and readily available threat to the security of the US homeland and the corresponding critical power and IT infrastructures.
In addition, the Chief Information Officer of a leading property and casualty insurance company presented a case study on the key decision points and process leading to its purchase of a turn-key EMP protected data center. The discussion included an overview of their collaborative work with Cyber Innovation Labs’ Design / Build / Operations team to deliver a comprehensive turn-key solution within a very well-defined technical specification, delivery schedule and GMAX budget structure. In addition, the new emerging risks facing the enterprise marketplace with regard to EMP, HEMP and IEMI were explored in detail.
The event showcased to attendees a first look at EMP GRID Services (a Cyber Innovation Labs venture) new ultra-resilient and survivable Protected Data Center – the first Level 4 shielded enterprise data center, purpose-built for EMP, HEMP (High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse), IEMI (Intentional Electromagnetic Interference) and GMS protection. Located in Mount Prospect, IL, this is the first commercially available MAX-Resilient facility, with centers in New York City, Northern, VA, Seattle, WA and Seoul, South Korea scheduled for delivery in 2015.
